Men's Golf in Pole Position at NCAA Championship, Sits Seventh

Sun Devil Men’s Golf carded a 1-under 279 (66-70-71-72=279/-1) paced by Michael Mjaaseth’s lethal 4-under 66, finishing in seventh securing a spot in Monday’s fourth round at the 2023 NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club. The top eight squads after Monday’s fourth round will advance to match play.

The Pac-12 Freshman of the year yielded just one bogey and fired five birdies on the course. His 66 is the lowest score by any of the 30 freshmen at this year’s championship and is the lowest score by a Sun Devil freshman in the three years Grayhawk has hosted the event.

“I felt great,” Mjaaseth said. “Honestly, I felt great. I was hitting the ball great and just waiting for the putts to fall and they finally did today, I needed this. I think we’re in a good position. We’re on the bubble and I think that’s going to bring the best out of us tomorrow. We’re in a good spot.”

“We’re right on the bubble, which is fine, we;ve been on the edge all year and I think we’ll handle it well,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “We love it. It’s great competition. I’m confident in my guys to bring it.”

Preston Summerhays rattled off an even 70 for ASU’s second highest score. He is 14th and 15th in the field on pars 3 and 5 holes, respectively, and sits tied for 23rd at 2-over 212 through 54 holes.

He is joined in a tie for 23rd by Josele Ballester who found both of his birdies on the round early in the back-nine for a 1-over 71. Ryggs Johnston was the final scorer for the Sun Devils, carding a 2-over 72 with consecutive birdies on six and seven.
