Rising Sophomore Goes Back-To-Back At Amateur Event
SAN JOSE – California men’s golfer Nathan Wang shot a third-round 63 to win the Ernie Pieper Santa Clara County Championship for the second consecutive year on Sunday at San Jose Country Club.
Wang, a rising sophomore for Cal, shot 6-under par over 54 holes (70-71-63 – 204) to win the amateur title by two strokes over Avinash Iyer (71-66-69 – 206). It was the fourth amateur title captured by the Golden Bears this summer, joining Costas Panay (Silverado Amateur), Sampson Zheng/Aaron Du (U.S. Four-Ball Championship) and Charlie Berridge (Glen Head Classic).
The Fremont native also won the Ernie Pieper in 2022 with a 7-under 203. Wang was a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honorable mention after averaging 72.64 strokes across 31 total rounds played in 10 events during the 2022-23 collegiate season.
