EAGLE TIME FOR COWLEY AT VOLVO CAR SCANDINAVIAN MIXED

Gabriella Cowley

Gabriella Cowley carded the lowest round of her LET career so far to move into contention at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed.

The Englishwoman fired a round of 64 (-8) on moving day in Sweden which was even more impressive because she had three eagles on her scorecard.

Cowley made her first eagle on the third hole, before dropping her only shot of the day on the eighth.

The 27-year-old then rolled in a birdie on 11 before another eagle on 12, her third eagle came at 15 and she ended the day with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18.

“I have never had three eagles in a round,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve had three eagles all year to be honest! So, to have them in one round was great.

“On the first eagle, I played a good shot. It was around 30-35 yards and I couldn’t see the pin at all and I just played such a nice chip and landed it where I wanted and I remember everyone going crazy when it went in.

“The second one I hit a hybrid quite close to six or seven foot and I holed that. With the last one, again I hit a hybrid over the water. It’s a tough hole as it is especially with the wind the way it was and I had about 15 feet and holed it.

“I didn’t even know what was happening. I didn’t know what score I was on. I was just playing and letting the rest take care of itself.”

At the 2022 edition of the tournament, Cowley finished as the second-best female behind winner Linn Grant.

And she is now in a tie for fifth place on the leaderboard on 11-under-par alongside Sweden’s Madelene Sagström, American Sean Crocker and England’s Matthew Jordan.

The English player enjoys teeing it up in mixed events and is hoping she can take her good form into the final day.

She explained: “The courses that the guys play are always set up really good. They are always usually a little bit longer – even though this week isn’t – but just the condition and the way they play, I think you take a lot from playing with them.

“It’s more opening up a little bit and seeing what they do and comparing myself really. These weeks I think I learn the most.

“Tomorrow I just want to keep playing. I have my dad out here which is nice to have him, and I just want to play well. I feel like it’s been close, but I’ve not really had it, so to actually do it and play well is just nice.”
