Summer Notebook: Duke Represented in Amateur and Professional Events

DURHAM – Duke men’s golfers are in the full swing of summer action, with current players participating in amateur events, while former Blue Devils appeared in both the U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open and made their presence felt on PGA Tour leaderboards.

Peters Makes Championship Match in R. Jay Sigel Match Play 

Rising junior John Peters used a strong showing in the stroke play portion of the R. Jay Sigel Match Play Championship before eventually falling, 1 down, in the title match. Peters began his tournament with an even-par, 72, in the first round of stroke play. In the second round of stroke play, the Carlisle, Pa., native carded a 4-under, 68, which tied for the third-best score to par by any player in the field for the round. With his 36-hole score of 4-under, 140, Peters secured the sixth seed in the match play bracket. En route to the final match, he defeated the 11th, third and second seeds by scores of 3&2, 1 up and 4&3, respectively. In the final match, Peters established a quick 2-up lead in the first two holes. Peters then played the next five holes at even-par but found himself trailing, 2 down, heading to the eighth hole. The match traded wins on seven of the next eight holes and eventually went to the par-3 18th with Peters trailing, 1 down. Peters rolled in a birdie on the final hole but his efforts were matched by his opponent, Karl Frisk, who claimed the victory.

Siebers Advances to Match Play at North-South Amateur

Rising senior Ian Siebers advanced to the quarterfinals of match play at the North-South Amateur in late June, held at the Pinehurst Resort. Siebers used a final-round 69 to secure a 1-under, 139, in the stroke play portion of the event and advance to match play for the second consecutive year. The Bellevue, Wash., native secured a victory in his first match on the 19th hole over 11th-seeded Tyler Wilkes before falling to sixth-seeded Gustav Frimodt in the Round of 16.

Blue Devils in U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Open

Kevin Streelman (’01) qualified for the 2023 U.S. Open, held at Los Angeles Country Club in mid-June, after shooting 69-67 at Brookside Golf & C.C. and The Lakes Golf & C.C. in Columbus, Ohio, during Final Qualifying. His appearance in the 2023 U.S. Open was his ninth U.S. Open start and he went on to secure a top-50 finish with a 6-over, 286.
