Lauren Sung Captures Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur Championship

OLYMPIA, Wash. — University of Michigan sophomore women’s golfer Lauren Sung used a dominating second 18 of her 36-hole championship match to defeat Angela Zhang, 4-and-3, today (Friday, July 14) and win the 2023 Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Women’s Amateur at the Olympia Country & Golf Club.
In their third event of the summer, twin sister Wolverines Lauren and Sydney Sung headed to Olympia for qualifying on Monday and Tuesday (July 10-11) In the 53-golfer amateur match play championships, Sydney posted a 36-hole total of 147 (71-76) to earn medalist runner-up honors and the No. 2 seed, while Lauren’s 157 (76-81) tied for 14th and positioned her as the 15th seed.
In the Round of 32 on Wednesday morning (July 12), Sydney defeated No. 31 seed Jessica Zelasko (2-and-1) while Lauren won 4-and-2 over No. 18 Amanda Jacobs to advance to the Sweet 16 and set up a sister vs. sister match. In the afternoon and after five lead changes in a back-and-forth match, Lauren came out victorious with a 2-and-1 win.
With Sydney taking over caddying duties on Thursday (July 13), Lauren posted a pair of 1-up wins to advance to the championship match. In the quarterfinal, Lauren defeated No. 10 seed Adithi Anand and followed with the win over No. 3 seed Yvonne Vinceri.
In the 36-hole championship match vs. No. 12 seed Angela Zhang, the battle remained even after 18 holes as each competitor won six holes apiece, tied on six and recorded four lead changes. Heading to the afternoon’s second 18, Lauren took control of the match winning five straight holes (Nos. 3-7). Despite dropping the ninth hole, Lauren took a commanding 4-up leading into the final nine holes.
Matching Zhang shot for shot and maintaining her composure, the championship duo halved the next six holes which helped Lauren secure the amateur title with a 4-and-3 victory.
