Chen Qualifies for U.S. Women’s Amateur; Li Advances

DURHAM – A third member of the Duke women’s golf program will be competing in the U.S. Women’s Amateur next month as senior Anne Chen shot a 1-under-par, 70, on Wednesday to qualify at the Gus Wortham Golf Course in Houston, Texas.

Chen joins sophomore Andie Smith and freshman Katie Li that will see action at the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif., Aug. 7-13.

A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Chen opened her day on fire.  After a par on hole No. 1, Chen reeled off three straight birdies to move to 3-under-par through four holes.  She parred the next seven holes, before moving to 4-under with a birdie on No. 12.  Chen closed with three bogeys and three pars to finish with a 70.

Chen placed tied for third overall with three other golfers so it left four golfers for only three remaining qualifying spots.  The golfers went back to hole No. 18 and Chen made a par to advance in a playoff.  Camryn Carreon shot a 66 to win medalist honors.

In the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, Li advanced to the round of 32 of match play Wednesday with a 1UP victory over Macy Pate.  Li, who is from Basking Ridge, N.J., never trailed as she won hole No. 2 with a birdie and No. 3 with a par to go 2UP.  She led 4UP through 12 holes, but Pate tried to rally winning holes No. 13, No. 15 and No. 17.  Both golfers parred No. 18 to give Li the 1UP victory.

Li will face No. 4 seed Kaili Xiao in the round of 32 on Thursday at the Eisenhower Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colo.
