Antonio Safa, an incoming transfer from the University of Missouri, has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Trojans men’s golf team, USC head coach Mark Hankins announced on Thursday (Aug. 3).
Safa, a former player of Hankins at Mizzou, will join his coach in Los Angeles. Safa completed his first year as one of the best and brightest for the Tigers. He competed in nine events for Mizzou and finished in the top 2 on the squad three times. The freshman led the Tigers in scoring in the fall of 2022, posting two top 5 finishes and averaging 69.11 in three events. Safa’s fifth-place finish at the Quail Valley Collegiate Championship, 13-under par (69-68-66), even earned him recognition amongst the conference, as he was named SEC Freshman of the Week (Oct. 20). He also posted a season-low score of 66, twice during the fall campaign. Safa appeared in 6 events in the spring, including the SEC Championships and NCAA Regional Championships. He finished the 2022-2023 season with a 70.81 regular season scoring average.
“We are excited to welcome Antonio to the team,” Hankins said. “He saw immediate success in his freshman season and continues to show great progress through international and elite series amateur events. He is a very skilled and dynamic player that will contribute immediately this fall.”
Like his teammate Nicolas Dominguez, Safa is a product of the Mexican circuit, as the incoming transfer calls Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, his hometown. Safa’s junior accolades include an individual title at the Mexican International Amateur Championship, making his name known after firing a 15-under par 269 (70-66-65-68) tournament June 9-12, 2022. He then qualified and competed on the PGA Tour at the Mexican Open at Vidanta Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta in May 2022.
The incoming sophomore should immediately be a core part of the Trojans’ top five as he joins Hankins for his inaugural season as USC’s head coach.
