Chen, Li & Smith Tee Off Monday in U.S. Women’s Amateur


LOS ANGELES – A trio of Duke women’s golfers – Anne Chen, Katie Li and Andie Smith – open action Monday in the U.S. Women’s Amateur, which will be played at the Bel-Air Country Club Aug. 7-13 in Los Angeles, Calif.

A starting field of 156 golfers will play 36 holes of stroke play qualifying Aug. 7-8 and then will be cut to the top 64 golfers for match play Aug. 9-13.  Five 18-hole rounds of match play will determine the finalists, who will square off in a 36-hole championship match on Aug. 13.  

Li, a product of Basking Ridge, N.J., is coming off a round of 16 appearance in the 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur.  Smith will be competing in her second straight, while Chen will tee off in her fifth U.S. Women’s Amateur.  

Smith opens action for the Blue Devils on Monday with a 10:21 a.m. (ET) tee time off hole No. 10, while Li will tee off at 11:18 a.m., on hole No. 1 and Chen has an afternoon time at 4:02 p.m., off No. 10.  

Fans will be able to watch the action on the Golf Channel Aug. 9-11 from 6-9 p.m. (ET).  On Aug. 12 for the semifinals, it will be aired from 3-6 p.m., and then the finals from 7-10 p.m., on Aug. 13.  

Duke has three golfers who have won the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Virada Nirapathpongporn won in 2003 at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa., while Amanda Blumenherst won in 2008 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., and Hannah O’Sullivan won in 2015 at the Portland Golf Club in Portland, Ore.

Also competing this week will be junior Rylie Heflin as she sees action in the Pennsylvania State Amateur Aug. 7-9 at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa.  Heflin, who is from Avondale, Pa., will play 54 holes over the three days.  She opens play Monday at 9:30 a.m.
