CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s golfers Ben James, Josh Duangmanee and Rui (Paul) Chang open play at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday (Aug. 14) in Colorado. The 312-player field will compete at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., and at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. Two rounds of stroke play will take place Monday and Tuesday before the field is cut to 64 players for match play. The tournament runs through Sunday.
This is the second consecutive year UVA has three players in the field. Last year James was joined by Deven Patel and Pietro Bovari.
James is making his third U.S. Amateur appearance. He placed ninth in stroke play last year and reached the Round of 32 in match play. He also played in the 2020 event but failed to make the cut during stroke play.
James enters the tournament ranked No. 6 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He is coming off a first year at UVA where he was named the winner of the 2023 Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award, a first-team Ping All-American, ACC Freshman of the Year and a finalist for both the Haskins and Jack Nicklaus Awards. He finished sixth at the NCAA Championships, set the UVA record with five first-place finishes and finished in the top six in 11 of 13 tournaments.
Duangmanee (Fairfax, Va.) and Chang (People’s Republic of China) are newcomers to the Cavalier roster this fall. Duangmanee will be a first-year while Chang is a third year who joined the program after competing for the University’s club program. Earlier this year Chang competed at the U.S. Amateur Four Ball Championship.
James is set to tee off at 8:28 a.m. MDT from the 10th tee at Colorado Golf Club. Chang starts at 8:50 a.m. MDT from the 10th tee at Cherry Hills while Duangmanee also starts his round at Cherry Hills at 9:01 a.m. MDT from the 10th tee.
The U.S. Amateur will be broadcast on Peacock and Golf Channel starting Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. ET.
