LOS ANGELES – Sam Lape, a 2023 NCAA national championship finals qualifier, has signed to compete as a graduate transfer with the Trojans men’s golf team, USC head coach Mark Hankins announced on Thursday (Aug. 17).
Lape, a veteran of collegiate golf, will join Hankins as the second transfer on the books for USC. The former Paladin has a long history of success, as he has been a regular starter for Furman since the spring season of his freshman year (2020-23). During that stretch, his biggest accomplishment is finishing second in the 2023 NCAA Salem Regional and advancing to the NCAA National Championship Finals. Heading into the final day of the regional, Lape held a seven-under-par total, placing him eighth on the leaderboard. However, the senior tallied one of the best rounds in the regional, as he fired a 64 (eight-under par round) to boost his position into the silver medal standing. Lape’s 201, 15-under par, second-place finish is the highest regional finish in Furman men’s golf history.
“We are excited to sign Sam as a graduate transfer for 2023-24,” coach Hankins said. “He is an experienced and talented player at the NCAA D1 level and will make an immediate impact on our lineup this fall. He is a competitor, and his positive leadership will be great for our team.”
Lape joins the USC men’s golf team with three top-five individual finishes. Aside from his historic NCAA Regional placement, the Atlanta, Georgia native has had great success at Furman’s conference championship. In the 2022 and 2023 Southern Conference Championships, Lape felt right at home as he finished tied for fifth at both championships.
The graduate transfer will significantly add to the squad, as he brings a 71.8 stroke average from the 2022-23 season. Lape will immediately vie for a starter position on the Trojans and will be a major asset to first-year head coach Mark Hankins.
