CU Alum Ivan Advances In U.S. Amateur

TRUCKEE, Calif. — University of Colorado golf alumnus Steve Ivan qualified here Sunday for the match play portion of the 68th Annual U.S. Senior Amateur.

Ivan, who resides in Colorado Springs, tied for 45th with a 75-78—153 effort, which was 9-over par; he tied with nine other players in that position and eventually drew the No. 51 seed.  The top 64 advanced into match play.

The Martis Camp Club course played tough on Sunday, with its 7,251-yard layout the longest in senior amateur history; only six players bettered the par-72 configuration with just five others equaling it.

Ivan, who played for the Buffaloes from 1981-84, started out strong, starting on the 10th tee and parring the first seven holes.  He finished the back nine with two bogeys to make the turn with a 38 score, but then would bogey five holes on the front nine.  He did birdie the par-5, 561-yard 8th hole en route to his 6-over 78 for the final round.

His first match will be against the No. 14 seed Brad Wayment at 1:50 p.m. MDT.  Wayment was in an eight-way tie for 14th with a 71-78—149 scorecard but drew highest seed out of the eight.  Wayment resides in Mesa, Ariz.

He is the first known Buffalo since 2001 to advance to the match play competition, the first of which is Monday’s Round of 64 (USGA records are vague prior to that year).  The remaining schedule calls for two rounds on Tuesday, with the quarterfinals and semifinals Wednesday and the 18-hole championship match on Thursday.
