East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State men’s golfers Drew Hackett, Ashton McCulloch and August Meekhof were named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List, announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Hackett, a fifth-year player who is entering his second year at Michigan State, was an All-Big Ten Second Team selection last year and earned a spot on the NCAA All-Midwest Region team. He finished first on the team in scoring average (71.86), posted two top-5 finishes, four in the top-10 and six among the top-20. Hackett was the team’s top finisher in six events, including a second-place finish at the Quail Valley Collegiate when he fired a 16-under par 200, the best 54-hole score in program history.
Meekhof had a strong summer with wins at the Michigan Amateur and the Golf Association of Michigan Championship, becoming the first golfer to win both titles in the same summer since 2008. An All-Big Ten Second Team pick and All-Big Ten Championship Team honoree in 2022, Meekhof finished third on the team in scoring average last year at 725.7. He won his first collegiate event in the spring, shooting an 11-under par 205 (68-69-68) to win the Colleton River Collegiate.
McCulloch became the second Michigan State golfer in the last three years to win a national title when he captured medalist honors at the Canadian Amateur in August. He automatically qualified to play in the U.S. Amateur last month and will play in next year’s RBC Canadian Open. McCulloch finished second on the team in scoring average (72.46) and posted two top-10 finishes, three in the top-20 and was the team’s top finisher in four events.
The Spartans, coming off an appearance in an NCAA Regional for the sixth time in the last seven years, open the 2023-24 season on Monday, Sept. 4, hosting the Folds of Honor Collegiate at famed American Dunes in Grand Haven, Mich. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will run through Wednesday, Sept. 6, features one of the best fields in college golf and will air live on The Golf Channel.
