Zheng, Lee Among Top 6 After First Round At Season-Opening Tournament
HARTFORD, Wisc. – Freshman Eric Lee eagled his first collegiate hole and was one of two Golden Bears to shoot under par on the first day of the season-opening Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on Sunday. The California men’s golf team finished the opening day with a 6-over-par 294 in sole possession of fourth place and seven strokes behind first place Purdue (-1).
Lee, the 2022 AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year, found himself 3-under through two holes played following his eagle on the par-5 first hole and a birdie on hole 2. A double bogey on hole 9 dropped the freshman, but he was able to work through the back nine holes with a birdie on hole 12 and a bogey on 15 to finish tied for sixth as Cal’s lone individual in the tournament.
Senior Sampson Zheng picked up where he left off from an All-American campaign last year with a 2-under 70 to tie for third after 18 holes. He was 2-under after nine holes played – three birdies on 2, 3 and 9 along with a bogey on 7 – and finished strong with birdies on 16 and 18 after bogeys on 11 and 16. Zheng enters the second round of competition just one stroke behind co-leaders Stefan Jacobs (Augusta) and Josh Robinson (Marquette).
Cal’s three other lineup scorers flashed strong showings throughout the day, highlighted by a 2-under front-nine effort from redshirt junior Ethan Chung. A pair of double bogeys dropped him back to a 2-over 74 for the round, while fellow redshirt junior Tony Chen and sophomore Daniel Heo notched 3-under 75 efforts.
Freshman Ethan Fang rounded out Cal’s efforts with a 4-over 76 in his collegiate debut.
