Michigan State Surges into First Place at Folds of Honor Collegiate

Grand Haven, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team fired a 5-under par 279 in the second round of the Folds of Honor Collegiate and moved from a tie to 10th place into the tournament lead after two rounds at American Dunes Golf Club Tuesday afternoon.

The Spartans, who were tied for 10th place after a 7-over par 291, stand atop the 18-team field at 2-over par 570.

MSU holds a three-shot lead over Arizona and South Carolina, who are tied for second place with scores of 5-over par 573, respectively.  Arkansas is in fourth place at 6-over par 547, with Notre Dame rounding out the top-five teams (10-over par 578).

Second Round Results

The Spartans are serving as a host for the second-year event along with The Folds of Honor, American Dunes and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Folds of Honor and the GCAA Presidential Scholar Fund.

“I suppose we settled in faster (today),” MSU Head Coach Casey Lubahn said. “I didn’t think we were ready for the nerves yesterday. This tournament is an incredible spectacle and I think our guys were pretty nervous, to be honest.  They got off to one of the worst starts I can remember in my career.

“They carried that through to hole 16 and then played great coming in and we just continued that this morning. We got comfortable, we knew the course and we knew we were playing well. I honestly didn’t look at the scores, I just thought we were playing steady, solid golf. It speaks to the talent here and hope we can continue it tomorrow.”

MSU teed off at noon starting on the back nine and made its move on holes 10 through 18, finishing at 5-under par as they made the turn.

Senior August Meekhof led the way for the Spartans. He had four birdies on the back nine and finished the day with a 2-under par 69 and is tied for fourth place in the field of 90 golfers at 1-under par 141 (72-69).

Junior Ashton McCulloch, who was tied for 32nd entering the day, fired a 3-under par on the back nine and finished the day at 2-under par and is tied for seventh place at even par 142 (73-69).

Graduate student Drew Hackett, who shot a 2-over par 73 in the opening round, carded a 1-under par 70 on Tuesday and is tied for ninth place at 1-over par 143 (73-70). He finished the day with three birdies, including one on his final hole, the par-4, 413-yard…
