STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men’s golf got off to the best start in program history on Friday afternoon, shooting a team total of 274 (-6). That stands as the lowest season-opening round in school history and is tied for the second-lowest opening round at a tournament by the Bulldogs.
Overall, MSU’s team total was tied for sixth in program history. State matched or bettered that total three times last season. The Bulldogs sit in second place, trailing host Tennessee by one stroke after 18 holes.
“It’s always a bit unknown how you will play the first round of the first tournament,” head coach Dusty Smith said. “I thought we did a very nice job of sticking to our game plan today and playing within ourselves. It always helps when you have all five guys in the round. We need to continue to focus on ourselves and compete hard the rest of the week in order to be successful.”
Hunter Logan paced the Bulldogs, who saw each of their five players land among the field’s top 30, with a 3-under 67. He currently sits in a tie for fourth and is two strokes back of the individual leader. Logan came on strong on the back nine, carding three consecutive birdies on Holes 13-15.
Garrett Endicott also recorded three straight birdies on the back nine, picking them up on Holes 10-12. Endicott birdied his first hole of the year and added an eagle on the fourth tee. He is tied for seventh and fired five total birdies through one round.
Logan and Endicott continue to climb the State record book for career rounds in the 60s and par or better rounds. Logan is fifth with 19 rounds in the 60s and fourth with 54 par or better rounds, while Endicott moved into a tie for ninth with 11 rounds in the 60s.
Also coming in under par was Harrison Davis. The Bulldog junior finished at 1-under 69 with birdies on the fourth, sixth and 15th tees. He is currently tied for 13th. Pedro Cruz Silva shot even par through the front nine before collecting to birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to shoot an even 70 and remain among the top 20.
