Watts, Johnson Card Top Scores for Utah Golf on Day One in Minnesota

MAPLE PLAIN, Minn.Braxton Watts posted a 3-under 68 to move 26 spots up the leaderboard during the second round of the Gopher Invitational, which began with 36 holes on Sunday at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Maple Plain, Minn.

“It’s crazy how bunched up the scoring is,” said head coach Garrett Clegg. “We are in 11th place and we are only 11 shots off the lead after 36 holes. Overall, we have to be better! We came back in the second round and played better and hopefully tomorrow we can build off of what we did this afternoon and play a lot better golf!”

Watts started the day with a 75 in round one, but found his form in the afternoon to start climbing up the rankings. The junior’s second round began with a bogey, but he then proceeded to rattle off four birdies over his next seven holes before closing the back nine with a par on the 18th. Watts added two more birdies in the second half of the round to finish off his 68, putting him 1-over for the day and tied for 25th.

One of the players sharing 25th with Watts is teammate Davis Johnson, who posted a pair of red scores in the first round on his way to a 1-over 72. Johnson sliced one stroke off that mark in round two, collecting multiple birdies on the front and back nine and shooting 2-under through his last 16 holes to finish with an even par 71 that also has him 1-over.

Brandon Robison recorded three round one birdies and reeled off 15 pars during his second trip around the course, putting him 3-over entering Monday and sharing 39th. Javier Barcos is 4-over and tied for 45th, while Go Nakatsukasa, who posted an even 71 in round two, is tied with one other golfer in 56th. As a team, the Utes shot 2-under in the second round and are tied for 11th.
