Stevens Paces Gators at Cougar Classic


The freshman is tied for 8th as round two of the season opener was suspended due to weather.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Florida women’s golfer Sophie Stevens paced the Gators in the season opener at the Cougar Classic on Monday as she is tied for 8th at 4-under. 

Round two was suspended due to weather at Yeamans Hall Club with Florida currently in 6th at 12-under and seven shots back from leader Clemson (-19). Play will resume tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. followed by round three. The Gators are in the back half of the round and are 3-under after shooting a round one of 275 (-9). 

Stevens started off her first collegiate round with a bogey-free 66 (-5). She made back-to-back birdies on 9 (par-5, 508) and 10 (par-4, 339) then two more on the back nine to go 3-under on the back. The freshman is currently tied for 4th in the field with eight birdies.

Also shooting under-par in her collegiate debut was Paula Francisco. Competing as an individual, she bounced back after a bogey on her first hole with four birdies for a 2-under 69 in round one. She is tied for 44th and is even.

The third Gator to break par in round one was a third newcomer in Sarunchana Rattanasin with a 67 (-4). She erased a bogey on her seventh hole and went bogey-free with four birdies. The Georgia Southern transfer is tied for 32nd at 1-under.

Tied with Rattanasin are seniors Maisie Filler and Jackie Lucena. The two each turned in an even round of 71 to start the tournament and both got to 1-under in round two. 

Marina Escobar rounds out the lineup in T61 and is currently 2-under through 12 holes in round two before it was halted.
