Freshman Earns Top-20 Finish In Albuquerque
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The California women’s golf team finished in the top half of the standings at the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational, battling through rainy conditions to take eighth place. The Golden Bears finished with a team score of 14-over 878 (303-279-296), overcoming a slow start to the tournament to move up seven spots over the final 36 holes.
Out of 16 teams in the field, Cal posted the sixth-best score in rounds two and three with a 1-under 576. Leading that charge was freshman Constance Fouillet, who ended the three-day, par-72 tournament at UNM Championship Golf Course with back-to-back under-par rounds.
Fouillet birdied on holes 1, 4 and 7 on Tuesday, eventually ending her Cal debut as the team’s low scorer and tying for 17th individually at 1-under 217 (76-71-70).
Ending in a tie for 31st place individually at 4-over 220 were sophomore Adora Liu (76-69-75) and senior Rina Tatematsu (73-72-75). Liu finished strong with two straight birdies heading into the final hole of the day. Tatematsu similarly bounced back from a shaky start to round three – which was delayed for an hour due to the rain – by shooting 1-under over the last 10 holes.
Junior Kaylyn Noh (+6, 222) settled in 41st place after carding an even-par 144 in the last two rounds. Senior Cristina Ochoa (81-73-76 – 230) also contributed to Cal’s round-three score, shooting 4-over 76.
