Independence, MN – Rutgers men’s golf finished in seventh place in their season-opening tournament at the 18th annual Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, MN.
The Scarlet Knights finished the two-day tournament in seventh place with a team score of 856 (+4).
Graduate student and three-time team captain Luke Wells led the charge for the Scarlet Knights as he finished the first tournament of the season in a tie for 11th place. The Springfield, Ohio, native shot a team-best 202 (-1).
Senior, Rhett Sellers, finished the tournament in a tie for 15th with a score of 213 (E). Sellers kicked off the 2023-2024 season with an impressive first two rounds on Sunday finishing in third place shooting a 71(-4). Sellers’ clutch play on Sunday included four birdies that helped Rutgers climb the leader board.
RU closed out Day 1 of the tournament with an impressive two rounds, in a tie for fourth place with a tournament score of 1-under par.
Fellow graduate student and team captain Xavier Marcoux also played an important role as he finished with a final score of 218 (+5) which earned him a tie for 40th place.
Weston Jones, a junior, finished the event tied for 49th place with a final score of 220 (+7). Jones played great on Monday as he was able to sink six birdies on his final day of the tournament.
Rutgers would finish the first tournament of the season in fourth place for team birdies (44), six behind UNC-Wilmington, who led the tournament with 50.
Individually, three Scarlet Knights finished in sixth place with birdies made. Sellers, Wells, and Jones all had ten birdies respectively.
In their first appearance at the tournament, UNC-Wilmington won by five strokes with a team score of seven-under-par.
Kansas’ Will King earned the individual tournament win with a score of eight-under0par.
RU will head to Chicago for the Highlands Invitational hosted by Wake Forest on September 18.
