Jakubcik Continues Strong Play in Fall; Cats in Crowded Middle of Leaderboard

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Behind an even par round from sophomore Filip Jakubcik, No. 19 Arizona Men’s Golf ended the first day of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational in a tie for eighth place at 6-over par. Jakubcik’s first-round performance put him in the top 15 of the individual leaderboards with teammate Tiger Christensen sitting one stroke behind him. Olympia Fields Country Club continued its tradition of challenging golfers as 13 of the 15 teams in the field did not break par on Friday.

“We had a few holes that really challenged us today with crooked numbers on our scorecards, but we were able to minimize that as the round went on,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “Olympia Fields requires strict discipline in shot selection and a dedication to the game plan, which we were reminded of today on those troublesome holes. We sit in a crowded pack of teams on the leaderboard, and I am confident Saturday will see better scores for us after a couple of minor adjustments.”

Jakubcik’s stellar play on Friday was a continuation of his strong start to the season. The sophomore from the Czech Republic posted top-10 finishes in each of Arizona’s first two tournaments of the season.

The Wildcats sit in a pack of 11 teams separated by six strokes in the middle of the leaderboard. Texas leads the event at 4-under after the first round with Georgia Tech one stroke behind the Longhorns. Arizona will tee off at 6 a.m. (MST) from Olympia Fields on Saturday, playing alongside Florida and Alabama.
