East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot an 11-over par 291 in the second round of the Fighting Illini Invite, being held on Olympia Fields North in Olympia Fields, Ill., just outside of Chicago.
The Spartans are in 15th place among 15 teams in a field featuring 15 teams that played in the NCAA Regionals last year and 11 of those that advanced to play in the NCAA Championships.
North Carolina fired an 11-under par 269 in the second round and took the lead at 10-under par 550, six shots ahead of Texas (4-under par 556). Georgia Tech is in third place at 3-under par 557, with Arizona State fourth at even-par 560 and Alabama fifth at 1-over par 561.
The Spartans are at 26-over par 586 after two rounds.
Junior Ashton McCulloch shot a 2-over par 72 in the second round and is tied for 44th place at 5-over par 415
Senior August Meekhof and junior Satchel Pierce are tied for 60th place with scores of 7-over par 147. Piece had the team’s best round of the day with a 1-over par 71, while Meekhof posted a 4-over par 74 on Saturday.
Senior Bradley Smithson carded a 4-over par 74 and is tied for 60th place at 8-over par 148 and freshman Lorenzo Pinili is in 80th place at 14-over par 154.
The Spartans tee off at 10 a.m. (ET) on the 15th hole on Saturday, playing alongside Stanford and Oklahoma State.
