Women’s Golf to Host Mary Fossum Invitational for First Time Since 2019


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s women’s golf team will host the 37th edition of the Mary Fossum Invitational this weekend, the first time the event has been held since 2019.

The Spartans will welcome 14 teams to their home course, Forest Akers West, with the tournament starting on Sunday, Sept. 17 with 36 holes and an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The Mary Fossum Invitational will conclude with 18 holes on Monday, also an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

The tournament will be played on the par-72, 6,370 yard course at Forest Akers West, which will serve as a host for one of six NCAA Regionals in May 2024.

Michigan State tees off on the first hole, playing alongside Grand Valley State and North Carolina.

THE MARY FOSSUM INVITATIONAL FIELD

The highly-competitive 15-team field includes both national and regionally-recognized programs. The teams playing this weekend include host Michigan State, Grand Valley State, Kent State, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Oakland, Ohio State, Purdue, Tennessee, Toledo and Virginia Tech.

 

LAST TIME OUT

Michigan State shot a 6-over par 287 in the final round of play and finished in 11th place among 17 teams at the Cougar Classic on Sept. 12. The teams were slated to play two rounds on Monday, but weather forced play to be stopped in the middle of the second round. The second round was completed on Tuesday morning and the final round started immediately afterward. The Spartans finished in 11th place with a three-day, 54-hole total of 2-over par 854 (281-286-287). Junior Katie Lu was the top finisher for the Spartans, tying for 15th place at 5-under par 208 (69-69-70). She completed a 2-under par 69 in the morning and closed the tournament with a 1-under par 70. Classmate Shannon Kennedy, who fired a 3-under par 68 in the first round, tied for 31st place at 2-under par 211 (68-70-73). She posted a 2-over par 73 in the final round.
