Cougars Sit 10th After Day 1 at Husky Invitational

BREMERTON, Wash. – Washington State Men’s Golf shot back-to-back rounds of 3-over, 291, and were currently in 10th place before darkness halted play late in the second round at the 2023 Husky Invitational Monday, played at the par-72, 7,115-yard Gold Mountain Olympic Course.

Monday’s second round was nearly complete with all but three teams having finished their rounds before play was called. WSU was one of 11 teams in the 14-team field to finish both rounds.

Senior Preston Bebich leads WSU at 2-under, 142, through the first 36 holes. Bebich shot an even-par 72 in the morning then followed that with a 2-under, 70, a round that included five birdies. Bebich sits tied for 12th overall.

Sophomore Sam Renner had WSU’s best round of the day on his opening 18 as he made the turn at even and was 1-over through 12. Renner then caught fire, going six-under over the final five holes, includes eagles at 14 and 18 sandwiched around a pair of birdies to finish at 5-under 67. On his second round, Renner didn’t have the same magic, ending his round with a 7-over, 79, finishing the day at 2-over, 146, tied for 42nd overall.

Following an opening-round 77, redshirt-freshman Ben Borgida rebounded with a 2-under, 70, going 3-under on the back nine as he sits at 3-over, 147 through 36 holes, tied for 52nd. Fifth-year senior Pono Yanagi improved three strokes following an uncharacteristic 4-over, 76, in the first round to shoot a 1-over, 73 in the afternoon, finishing his first day a 5-over, 149, tied for 60th. Yanagi’s second round included three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 14th.

Senior Nate Plaster is tied for 70th after he shot rounds of 76-78, to finish Monday at 10-over, 154.

Through 36 holes, junior Franklin Lydra sits tied for 11th at 4-under, 140 after rounds of 69-71 with a combined nine birdies on the day.
