PHOENIX — Junior Frederik Eisenbeis led the four University of Colorado men’s golfers competing here Monday in the inaugural Arizona State Papago Individual.
In a growing format around the country, individual tournaments are springing up to allow more players to compete without any team competition, which counts against the number of competition days a school can play (24, the same allowable maximum for players with a few exceptions).
Eisenbeis turned in a 3-over 145 effort Monday on the 7,551-yard, par-71 Papago Golf Course configuration (74-71), which has him 17th in the standings. He was fairly consistent on the day with five birdies and 23 pars against eight bogeys, while playing the par-5s 1-under, the par-3s 1-over and the par-4s 3-over. His 23 pars were sixth-best for the first two rounds.
Sophomore Robby Keilch is tied for 21st after a 5-over 76-71—147 performance, matching Eisenbeis’ par effort the second time around t0he Papago track. He had six birdies and 20 pars to go against nine bogeys and a double, playing the par-5s the best a 3-under for the six combined between the rounds (tied for the fifth-best in the field).
Freshman Ty Holbrook turned in a 76-75—151 scorecard, his 9-over effort tying him for 28th. He had a team-high seven birdies (tied for 10th in the field), with 15 pars, 12 bogeys and two doubles. He, too, played the par-5s the best at 3-under.
Junior Tucker Clark is tied for 30th after rounds of 75 and 77 for a 10-over 152 total. He had 3 birdies and 20 pars opposite 13 bogeys, with the par-3s causing him the most damage on the day (5-over on the eight combined), but three of those in each round are playing among the toughest through two rounds.
Arizona State’s Gabriel Salvanera will enter the final round with a four stroke lead, as he’s 12-under par with a 64-66—130 scorecard; he had 12 birdies and one bogey Monday.
The third and final round is set for Tuesday morning; the Buffaloes return to action as a team next Monday in New Mexico’s William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque.
NOTES: The temperature reached 102 degree in Phoenix on Monday, “cooling” to 95 by the end of the day’s action; Tuesday’s high is forecast to be in the upper 90s … The average score for Monday’s 68 total rounds was 72.63 (almost a stroke lower in the second rounds – 72.18 – than the first – 73.09) … Just nine players are under par and other two even through 36 holes … Eleven schools sent…
