BREMERTON, Wash. – Freshman Luke Powell finished in third place at 10-under in his collegiate debut to lead the UCLA men’s golf team at the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club on Tuesday. As a team, the Bruins tied for sixth at 3-under, 861.
UCLA’s performance was its best to start a season in four years when it placed third at 5-under at the 2019 Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills Golf Course.
Course host Washington won the Husky Invitational by 26 strokes at 40-under, 824. Powell from Laguna Niguel, Calif. posted the best finish by a non-Husky at the tournament. Washington golfers Taehoon Song and Petr Hruby placed first and second at 15-under and 12-under, respectively.
Powell shot scores of 70-68-68 and totaled 11 birdies, two eagles and five bogeys over his three rounds. Fellow freshman Alex Papayoanou and sophomore Kyle An tied for 32nd at 1-over for the tournament.
After a 3-over 75 in Papayoanou’s first round, The Woodlands, Texas native fired back-to-back 1-under, 71s to jump 25 total spots on the leaderboard.
Omar Morales tied for 58th (+7) with scores of 73-76-74. Morales found his groove after the turn in round three with a 3-under 33 after shooting 5-over 41 on the front nine.
Andy Yoon tied for 74th (+20) in his UCLA debut.
UCLA is back in action in two weeks when it competes at the Hamptons Intercollegiate on Oct. 2-3 at Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton, N.Y.
