UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – USC women’s golf steamrolled its competition with a 31-stroke advantage in its first team title of the 2023-24 season. Junior Amari Avery was at the helm of this dominant performance as she clinched the individual title at the Leadership and Golf Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.
The Women of Troy saw only a few setbacks in their first hint of action in the fall portion of the golf schedule, as all four counting scorers finished within the top-five spots on the leaderboard. As a team, they combined to shoot 27-under-par (837) in three rounds of action. This mark was the lowest total USC has put together since it posted a 39-under-par tournament at the Icon Invitational in February 2022. It is the largest victory since the Trojans won by 34 strokes at The Gold Rush tournament in February 2021.
“This was a really good week from start to finish and Tiffany and I are thrilled we were able to leave with a trophy,” head coach Justin Silverstein said. “The entire roster prepared hard and smart for this event, and we love to see that hard work pay off. I’m so happy for Amari to get to win No. 5 and break our rounds in the 60s record while doing it. She’s been an incredible asset to our program, and we appreciate her hard work.”
This tournament played a massive role in Avery’s legacy, as she broke the USC record for most rounds in the 60s for a career (23) and moved up into a tie for the second most wins in a career (5).
Avery rattled off her best performance in round three of the tournament as she posted a 67 (-5); the junior birdied four holes on the front side and three on the back. Avery had to move up just one spot to clinch another tournament title, as she finished nine-under-par for the invitational.
In the silver medal spot, sophomore Catherine Park and senior Brianna Navarrosa tied each other at seven-under-par. Navarrosa utilized one of the best rounds in the tournament, as tallied a 67 (-5). The senior’s round was highlighted by her final four holes on the front, as she went birdie, eagle, birdie and birdie to finish the front side four-under-par.
