FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Arizona Women’s Golf graduate senior Gile Bite Starkute carded her team’s lowest round with an even par 72 on Sunday at the Mason Rudolph Championship. Starkute tied her teammate, Nena Wongthanavimok, as the Wildcats’ top finisher at 2-under for the tournament and tied for 23rd. Arizona finished the event in ninth place out of 18 team at 3-over par.
“We had our moments of really good golf this week, but we weren’t able to be as consistent as we had hoped,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “The first tournament of the season is a great indicator of where our team is at, and I believe this weekend will be a great learning experience for our team. We have a driven group of young ladies, and we are all eager to get back to practice and grow as a team moving forward.”
Wongthanavimok led the Cats during the first two rounds this week, firing back-to-back rounds of 68. It mirrored her strong play in this same event last season, which saw the then-freshman open the tournament with a 4-under round of 68. Starkute earned her top-25 showing after playing her best on Vanderbilt Legends Club’s longest holes. She led the Wildcats, and ranked in the top 10, in par-5 scoring at 5-under.
Host Vanderbilt utilized a final round of 6-under par to win the Mason Rudolph Championship with a final team score of 24-under. Caitlyn Macnab of Ole Miss won the individual title with a final score of 12-under par after shooting 4-under on Sunday.
The Wildcats will return to action for their second tournament of the season next week. Arizona tees off on Monday, Oct. 2 at the Windy City Classic at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill.
