Cal Enjoys Best Scoring Day Ever
SEASIDE – It was a record-setting first day at the Molly Invitational for the California women’s golf team, which began things by shooting 17-under-par 271 for its best 18-hole round in program history. Freshman Constance Fouillet’s 6-under 66 in the opening round tied the Golden Bears’ individual program record.
The Bears closed the day out at 19-under 557 – an all-time best for 36 holes – and will head into round three on Tuesday one stroke behind first-place San Jose State.
With its entire roster in action, Cal – which is co-hosting the tournament alongside Oregon State – came out on fire with seven of its nine members carding a -1 or lower in the first round. The Bears finished the day with 12 par or better rounds out of 18 and placed three golfers in the top five of the individual leaderboard.
Fouillet (-6, 138) went on a torrid stretch early in the day with birdies on six of eight holes. She ended the day tied with junior Kaylyn Noh for third place individually.
Noh opened up with a 5-under 67 in round one with eight birdies of her own, including three in a row on holes 1-through-3. This is the second straight competition that she has been shot away from tying the program’s individual 18-hole record.
Joining Fouillet and Noh in the top five was Adora Liu, who posted a 5-under 139 (69-70). Liu and fellow sophomore Olivia Lee both enjoyed their personal-best rounds as Bears, each posting a 3-under 69 in the first round. Lee (-2, 142) is tied for 17th heading into Tuesday.
Right behind Lee in a tie for 21st place is senior Cristina Ochoa (-1, 143). Senior Rina Tatematsu rounded out Cal’s main lineup at 3-over 147 (71-76). She finished in a tie for 35th place with sophomore Anna Molly, who posted identical scores in both rounds.
Cal will begin day two Tuesday with another 8:30 a.m. PT shotgun start.
