SEASIDE, Calif. — Washington State freshman Alice Johansson shot opening-day rounds of 69-72 and sits tied for 14th overall at 3-under, 141, following the first 36 holes Monday at the 2023 Molly Collegiate Invitational at the 6,128-yard, par-72 Bayonet Golf Course.
As a team, the Cougars completed the first two rounds at +14, 590, and in eighth place, five strokes behind Georgia Southern. San Jose State at -20 leads the field, one stroke ahead of host California and three ahead of Oregon.
Johansson started strong, posting a 3-under 69 in the first round, which included six birdies on her opening 18 holes. The freshman from Bollnäs, Sweden followed that with an even-par, 72, to finish the day tied for 14th overall. Teammate Madelyn Gamble is two strokes back after rounds of 70-73 to end her day at 1-under, 143, tied for 21st. Gambel was solid throughout the day, posting a bogey-free round in the morning that included two birdies on the front nine.
Junior Sarah Skovgaard-Bils rebounded from a slow start in her opening round to improve by 10 strokes in the afternoon, firing an even-par 72 in the second round. Bils’ second 18 holes, her best round of the young season, included four birdies and 10 pars. Skovgaard-Bils is tied for 48th at 10-over, 154. Danielle Suh, a graduate student from San Ramon, Calif., followed her opening-round 76 with a seven-over 79 in the afternoon and sits T-52nd at 11-over, 155.
Sophomore Hannah Harrison struggled to find any rhythm Monday as she posted rounds of 79-84, and finished Monday at +19, 163, tied for 62nd overall.
Play concludes at The Molly Tuesday with a final 18 holes. Play begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
