Serra’s Career Round Paces State At SEC Match Play

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State’s men’s golf team finished the stroke play portion of the SEC Match Play event in ninth place and carded a 3-under 849 for the tournament as a whole.

Individually, the Bulldogs were led by a 6-under 65 from Josep Serra. The junior transfer’s round was good for a career-low. It also tied Hunter Logan’s first-round performance for the lowest carded by a Bulldog this week. Serra stands as one of just nine players to have recorded a 65 or lower round during the tournament, and he finished 15th individually, earning his second consecutive top-20 finish.

“I’m really proud of Josep and how he played today,” head coach Dusty Smith said.

“His round was huge for our team. He did a great job staying in the moment and trusting himself out there. We have a tough matchup with LSU tomorrow in match play. We need to be excited to compete and adjust our mindset to match play now.”

Garrett Endicott (-4) was the Bulldogs’ second-highest finisher, earning a 24th-place finish. Endicott added another birdie in a 2-over effort, bringing him to 10 total over the three rounds. Endicott has recorded four rounds in the 60s this season and has moved into sole possession of the seventh most 60 or better rounds in program history with 14.

“It certainly wasn’t our best week, but we learned a lot about where we need to get better. I’m always impressed with our fight and grit out there. No one gave in, and we did a good job of battling all week without having our best stuff,” Smith added.

State will now turn its attention to the match play portion of the event and will face LSU on Wednesday morning. The Bulldogs are scheduled to tee off at 8:20 a.m. CT from the No. 10 tee.  Mississippi State last competed in match play at the 2023 SEC Championship event, dropping a 3-2 match to then top-seeded Tennessee.
