The fourth edition of the Big Match between Cal and Stanford’s men’s and women’s golf teams will be played Thursday in Woodside.

Cal’s Men’s And Women’s Golf Teams To Clash With Stanford

BERKELEY – Bragging rights will be on the line Thursday as the California men’s and women’s golf teams join forces to face their Stanford counterparts in the Big Match at Menlo Country Club in Woodside.

The unique match-play event – which starts at noon PT Thursday – will be played for the fourth time since its creation in 2018. The Golden Bears won the first two editions of the competition in 2018 and 2019 while Stanford pulled out a victory last September. Seven mixed pairs from each rival school compete in a better ball match play format. Each of the seven matches is worth one point, with a total of seven points available in the overall match competition.

Both Cal squads are off to impressive starts this fall, having competed in two stroke-play events apiece. The Cal women won a share of the Molly Invitational title with a program-record-shattering 28-under-par (836) performance Tuesday in Seaside while Cal’s men claimed top-three finishes at the Marquette Intercollegiate (Sept. 3-5) and the Husky Invitational (Sept. 18-19), the former including a co-medalist finish by freshman Eric Lee in his collegiate debut.

Three Bears from both the men’s and women’s teams – Aaron Du, Tony Chen, Sampson Zheng, Adora Liu, Cristina Ochoa and Mika Jin – will be making their second Big Match appearances. Du and Ochoa will team up once again after earning a start-to-finish 2&1 win in last year’s event. Zheng also won his match 1-up alongside Jieming Yang; he’ll be paired with Oklahoma State transfer Rina Tatematsu on Thursday.
