GOLF, Ill. – The UCLA women’s golf team owns an eight-shot lead at 24-under following the conclusion of day one at the Windy City Collegiate Classic at Glen View Club on Monday. Play was suspended late into round two due to darkness.
In round one, all five Bruins shot under par to finish 16-under 272 for the fourth lowest 18-hole score in program history. The performance comes on the heels of UCLA’s 15-under 273 in the final round of the Mason Rudolph Championship eight days ago in which all five Bruins also shot under par.
Each member of the UCLA rotation is on pace to shoot under par once again in round two, set to finish tomorrow. Round three will begin shortly thereafter.
Zoe Antoinette Campos leads a quartet of Bruins in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard in third place at 7-under. Campos recorded a spotless scorecard in round one with five birdies and zero bogeys for a 5-under 67.
Sophomore Meghan Royal set another career low with a bogey-free, 6-under 66 to lead the Bruins in round one. Royal’s three lowest 18-hole scores as a collegian have come within the last two tournaments, including her 5-under 67 in round three at the Mason Rudolph Championship. She is currently tied for fifth in the Windy City Collegiate Classic at 5-under with three holes left to play in round two. Royal is coming off her first career top 20 finish last week.
Joining Royal in a tie for fifth at 5-under for the tournament is Kate Villegas. The senior from Arcadia, Calif. had a birdie-birdie start and finish in round one to shoot 4-under 68. Villegas wrapped up round two with another birdie-birdie finish to get to under par for a 1-under 71.
Caroline Canales is tied for 10th at 4-under. After four bogeys on her first nine holes in round two, Canales caught fire after the turn with five birdies to finish 3-under 69.
Alessia Nobilio is tied for 18th after back-to-back under par rounds (71-70).
Texas is in second place at 16-under.
