North Carolina’s final round 10-under-par 270 was the lowest team score of the day but No. 2-ranked Vanderbilt made two birdies on the final hole of the tournament to edge the Tar Heels by a single stroke in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational Tuesday at Shady Oaks Country Club in Westworth Village, Texas.
Austin Greaser led the top-ranked Tar Heels with a 5-under 65 today and Maxwell Ford and Kenan Poole each shot 67 as Carolina went from fourth place after Monday’s first two rounds to a one-shot lead with a few holes to play.
Vanderbilt’s Matthew Riedel and Cole Sherwood then made birdies on the 440-yard, par-4 final hole to tie and then edge UNC.
Sherwood was medalist, defeating Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech on the first playoff hole. They had tied for first after 54 holes at 7-under 203.
Carolina’s David Ford (66-68-71) tied for fifth place at 5-under 205. Maxwell Ford (70-71-67) tied for 12th at 3 under par.
Greaser (71-72-65) made six birdies and only one bogey today to shoot 65, his fourth career round of 65 or better. He tied for 14th at 2-under 208.
Poole’s 67 tied his career best (his sixth 67) and wass his best career result in the starting lineup. He also made six birdies today and finished tied for 22nd at even-par 210 (69-74-67).
Dylan Menante (71-69-72) tied for 30th at 2-over 212.
Carolina returns to competition October 9-10 when it hosts the Williams Cup presented by STITCH Golf at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C.
