Yost Earns Top 10 Finish in Wisconsin – University of Nebraska

Quinn Yost put together three consistent rounds to tie for ninth in a 90-player field and lead the Nebraska men’s golf team to a sixth-place finish at the Badger Invitational on Tuesday.

Yost, a sophomore from Farmington, N.M., closed the best tournament of his young career with a 71 (-1) on the 7,271-yard layout at the University Ridge Golf Club to close with a career-best three-round total of 212 (-4). His performance included a career-best-tying 69 (-3) in Sunday’s opening round, before adding an even-par 72 on Monday. Yost’s previous collegiate best came with a 222 at the William H. Tucker Invitational in his home state of New Mexico last season.

With Yost leading the way, Nebraska finished sixth in the 18-team tournament with an 860 (-4), including a final-round 295 (+7). The Huskers finished just nine strokes back of the tournament champions from Florida Gulf Coast (851). FGCU edged Illinois State and Middle Tennessee (852) by just one stroke, while Long Beach State and VCU closed three shots back of the leaders at 854 (-10).

The 18-team Badger Invitational field featured six 2023 NCAA Regional qualifiers, including Illinois State, Middle Tennessee and Long Beach State, which finished ahead of the Huskers in the final standings. Nebraska finished ahead of Marquette, Northern Illinois and the hosts from Wisconsin, which all qualified for the postseason a year ago. 

Hamish Murray added his second straight top-20 individual finish for the Huskers, tying for 19th at 215 (-1). The junior from Sydney, Australia managed a 74 (+2) on Tuesday after carding rounds of 69 and 72 over the tournament’s first two days.

Fifth-year senior Will Marshall tied for 43rd at 218 (+2), but settled for a 77 (+5) after struggling over the final nine holes on Tuesday. Junior Harry Crockett finished one shot back of Marshall at 219 (+3) in a tie for 45th after a 73 (+1) in the third round.

Senior Reed Malleck rounded out the Husker contingent with a 222 (+6) including a final-round 77. Malleck tied for 58th.

South Alabama’s Joshua Hill won the individual title with a 54-hole total of 208 (-8), including a final-round 67 (-5). FGCU’s Austin Cherichella and Middle Tennessee’s Owen Stamper tied for second at 209 (-7), just one shot back of Hill.

The Huskers will be back in action at the Purdue Fall Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., Oct. 9-10.
