Second Round Action Suspended Due to Darkness at Stephen’s Cup


DALLAS, Texas – The second round of the Jackson T. Stephen’s Cup was suspended on Monday due to darkness with the Duke women’s golf team sitting in seventh place with as many as eight holes remaining at the 6,466-yard, par-72 Trinity Forest Golf Club.

The Blue Devils will resume second round action and finish the third round on Tuesday morning.  

Texas was the only team to finish its second round and lead the action with a 16-under, 560.  South Carolina (-13), Stanford (-13), Wake Forest (-13), Texas A&M (-10), Arkansas (-4) and Duke (-1) round out the field.  

How It Happened – Round One

•    Duke opened the day with a 1-over, 289, and was in seventh place after 18 holes.  The Blue Devils were 3-under on the front nine and were 4-over on the back.  

•    On Monday morning, rookie Katie Li turned in her third straight round of even or under par as she signed for an even-par, 72.  She opened her day with a par on No. 1 and then rolled in a birdie on the par-5 second hole to get in the red.  After bogeys on No. 4 and No. 8, she made the turn with a 1-over, 37.  Li played her final 10 holes at 1-under-par with a birdie on No. 16.

•    With three birdies, Andie Smith posted her fourth consecutive round of even or under par with a 72.  After five straight pars to open her round, Smith rolled in a birdie on the 387-yard, par-4 sixth hole.  She made the turn at 1-under, 35, and then went through a rough stretch with three bogeys over a span of four holes.  Smith regrouped and parred holes No. 15, 16 and 17, before sinking a birdie on No. 18 to finish even.  

•    Leading Duke with five birdies on the day, Phoebe Brinker had a solid round that was derailed by a pair of double-bogeys.  Brinker, who is from Wilmington, Del., had her lone bogey on No. 1 and then birdied No. 2.  She dropped two shots with a double-bogey on No. 6, but got hot over the next 10 holes by rolling in four birdies.  Brinker had birdies on No. 6, No. 8, No. 13 and No. 14 to get to 2-under.  She had a double-bogey on No. 17 and finished with a 72.

•    Graduate student Emma McMyler had Duke’s best start to the day with four birdies over her first five holes to get to 3-under-par.  She birdied No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 along with a bogey on No. 3.  She then parred the next four holes to make…
