Cats Finish Runner-Up After Historic Week at Stephens Cup

DALLAS, Texas – The thrilling rollercoaster of golf action at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup continued in Wednesday’s match play for the team championship. No. 18 Arizona Men’s Golf dropped the match to No. 20 Florida State, 3 to 2, on the final holes to earn a runner-up finish at the event. The Wildcats, who had Tiger Christensen take home the individual title the day before, played plenty of record-breaking golf at Trinity Forest Golf Club throughout the week.

“Obviously we came up a little short of sweeping the championship titles this week, but our entire team played three days of elite golf,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “We were at our best for 54 holes of stroke play and came right back in great form for match play. I am proud of our team for competing at the highest level in a postseason golf environment. We broke some incredible team records this week and are ending our fall schedule on a high note.”

Arizona got its match play points from Tiger Christensen and Yannick Malik who each defeated their Seminole opponents 2&1 to take a brief 2-to-1 lead. FSU won each of the last two points to clinch the victory after winning stroke play as a team with a final score of 51-under par.

The Wildcats rewrote the program record books during stroke play as Tiger Christensen won the individual crown at 19-under, which was the lowest 54-hole individual score in school history. Arizona fired a blistering-low final round of 20-under to finish stroke play at 46-under par. The final team score of 46-under was also the lowest team score over 54 holes in program history.

The Cats concluded their fall schedule with Wednesday’s second-place finish. Arizona will return to official competition in 2024 when it takes on Arizona State in the Copper Cup at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona on Sunday, Jan. 14.
