USC Men's Golf Gears Up For Golf Club of Georgia Intercollegiate

Men’s Golf | October 12, 2023

ALPHARETTA, Ga.–The USC men’s golf team heads down south for its third tournament of the season, teeing off on Friday morning (Oct 13.) in Alpharetta, Ga. for the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational. The three-day competition will be played on the Golf Club of Georgia’s Lakeside Course consisting of three stroke play rounds, with the first on Friday, the second on Saturday, and the final round taking place on Sunday.

Last year, the Stanford Cardinal took home the title at 23-under, 1-stroke in front of tournament host Georgia Tech as well as Pepperdine, while the Trojans finished their final day in 12th. Six of the 13 teams this weekend are ranked inside the Top 25 of the NCAA Coaches Poll, and the Trojans look to build on their solid performance from the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate last week.

Speaking about the team’s familiarity with the course and their trajectory throughout the fall, Coach Hankins remarked, “We actually have a Georgia native in Sam Lape, so he’s played this golf course quite a few times along with the guys that have already completed at this golf course. It’s our third tournament so the guys are getting more comfortable with my system and how we do things. In golf that is important and leads to more consistent practice, play and finishes. With three 18 hole rounds this weekend, it’s a marathon and we need to be able to keep ourselves at a high level all three days to continue or improvement this fall in a strong field.”

The Lakeside Course was the first of the two tracks at the Golf Club of Georgia to be built in 1991 and garnered the award of “Best New Private Course” the same year. Originally designed by the renowned Arthur Hills, the course was tweaked in 2016 by Bob Cupp and the green complexes were replaced. Known for its rolling terrain and massive undulating greens, the Lakeside Course offers Bermuda fairways into Bent grass greens with Kentucky fescue to accent the bunkers and waste areas. The par-72 course will play 7,092 yards for all three days of competition.
