University of North Carolina junior David Ford led the field with a final-round 8-under-par 64 to help lead the United States to an 11-stroke victory Saturday in the 2023 World Amateur Team Championship in Abu Dhabi.
Ford climbed 28 spots in the fourth round to finish tied for fifth at 13-under 275, three strokes behind the individual champion, Kazuma Kobori of New Zealand. Kobori shot a 7-under 65 today, which equaled the second-best round of the day behind Ford’s 64.
The United States, whose team included Ford, Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent and Alabama’s Nick Dunlap, won the team title at 36 under par. Australia and Norway tied for second at 25 under, France was fourth at 24 under and Italy and New Zealand tied for fifth at 23 under.
Ford shot 7-under 29 on the front nine and 1-under 35 on the back today. The 64 equaled the best round of the four-day tournament. Norway’s Herman Senke shot the only other 64 in the second round on Thursday.
Ford made birdies on the second, third, fourth and fifth hole, made an eagle 3 on the sixth and birdied the eighth. He shot 68-74-69-64 in the four rounds.
The Peachtree Corners, Ga., native has played on winning teams for the United States in 2023 in the Palmer Cup, Walker Cup and now the World Amateur Team Championship.
Dunlap finished second in the individual standings at 15-under 273, one back of Kobori. Sargent joined Ford in a tie for fifth place at 13-under.
