Men’s Golf Debuts At East Lake Cup Monday

Carolina men’s golf plays its fifth and final tournament of the fall semester Monday through Wednesday, October 30-November 1 in the East Lake Cup at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
 
For the second time in as many weeks the Tar Heels are competing in a four-team event. Last week, it was the St Andrews Links Collegiate in Scotland, where the Tar Heels finished second after 36 holes of stroke play and runner-up to Vanderbilt in medal match play for the championship.
 
Despite the outcome, the Golf Coaches Association again ranks the Tar Heels No. 1 in the nation heading into this week’s competition, which pits the four semifinalists from the 2023 NCAA Championships – UNC, national champion Florida, finalist Georgia Tech and Florida State.
 
The teams will play one day of stroke play followed by two days of match play. The teams will be seeded one through four after 18 holes of stroke play with No. 1 facing No. 4 and No. 2 and No. 3 squaring off in the two semifinals on Tuesday.
 
The championship and consolation matches are Wednesday, beginning at 11 a.m.
 
David Ford was not in the lineup in Scotland due to playing in the United Arab Emirates in the World Amateur Team Championship, where he tied for fifth in the individual standings and helped lead the U.S. to victory. The fifth-ranked amateur in the world was the medalist in his previous college start, defeating fellow All-America Nick Gabrelcik of North Florida on the first extra hole in the Williams Cup at Eagle Point Golf Club on October 10.
 
Joining David Ford in the Tar Heel lineup will be Maxwell Ford, Austin Greaser, Kenan Poole and Peter Fountain. Dylan Menante, No. 6 in the world rankings, is not available as he is playing for Team USA in the Pan American Games in Chile.
 
Maxwell Ford leads UNC in stroke average through four starts at 69.70 and has two top 10s (second at Olympia Fields and ninth at St Andrews).
 
Greaser is No. 10 in the world. Like David Ford and Menante, he was a member of the U.S.’s Walker Cup winning team at the Old Course in early September. Second all-time behind David Ford in UNC career scoring average, Greaser shot 66 in the second round last week at the Jubilee Course.
 
Poole has shot in the 60s twice in two of the last three tournaments in his first season as a regular in the Tar Heel lineup. He shot 69-74-67 and tied for 22^nd in…
