Second-Round Play Suspended After Morning Frost Delay

CARMEL – Sophomores Nathan Wang and Daniel Heo shot 3-under-par 69s to lead the California men’s golf team in the first round of the Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club on Monday. The Golden Bears collectively shot a 2-over 290 and sit in sole possession of 11th place after 18 holes of play.
 
The start of the first round was pushed back an hour due to a frost delay, resulting in second-round play being suspended at 6 p.m. PT. The second round will be picked up Tuesday morning, followed by the third and final round of the event.
 
Wang – who is coming off a third-place individual finish in Cal’s win at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational earlier this month – birdied five of his final eight holes on the way to the first-round 69. He’s tied for sixth individually along with Heo, who is playing as an individual. Heo carded an eagle on hole 8 and four birdies to overcome a triple bogey on hole 4. The Cal duo is just two strokes behind co-leaders Nate Stember (Oregon) and Nicolas Dominguez (USC).
 
Charlie Berridge totaled six birdies on the way to a 1-under 71, while Tony Chen, Ethan Fang and Ethan Chung all shot 3-over 75s.
 
Oregon (-8), UCLA (-6) and USC (-5) lead the 15-team field after 18 played.

Round two of the Cal Poly Invitational will be resumed at 8:30 a.m. PT, followed by the third round.
