LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women’s golf program has received a signed National Letter of Intent (NLI) from Angela Liu, as announced on Wednesday by head coach Alicia Um Holmes.
Liu, from Irvine, Calif., was a two-time ROLEX Junior Honorable Mention All-American in 2021 and 2022. She was a four-year letterwinner at Santa Margarita Catholic High School.
“Angela has all the qualities we look for in our student-athletes: she’s an accomplished golfer, brings depth to our already competitive line up, excels in academics and will be an amazing teammate,” Um Holmes said. “We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome her and her parents, Alan and Ying, to our Bruin family.”
Liu starred on a Santa Margarita Catholic squad that had its best year in program history in 2022. In Liu’s junior year, Santa Margarita Catholic double swept the individual and team titles at the CIF State Championships and CIF Southern California Regional Championships. Liu won the CIF state medal at San Gabriel Country Club by five strokes, shooting 5-under 67.
Liu has also put forth strong showings at prominent USGA events. In 2022, she competed at the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Chambers Bay where she tied for 16th in stroke play (-3; 68-65) and U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Puerto Rico where she reached the quarterfinal round with her partner Charissa Shang. Liu tied for 21st (E, 72-72) and won her first round of match play in her first U.S. Women’s Amateur appearance at Old Waverly Golf Club in 2019. She also made appearances at the 2020 and 2021 U.S. Women’s Amateurs.
Liu has secured three American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) victories, most recently at the 2022 Girls Division Championship at PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif. with a score of 12-under 204. In 2021, she earned the first two AJGA titles of her career at the Under Armour/Jordan Spieth Championship at The Golf Club of Dallas (+3, 213) and The FOX Sports Junior at Mission Viejo Country Club (E, 216).
In 2023 AJGA events, Liu has posted two top-20 placements highlighted by a t-5th mark in her most recent tournament at the AJGA Girls Invitational in September (-3, 213).
She was ranked No. 106 in the latest ROLEX American Junior Golf Association rankings.
Liu was born in Xiangcheng, China.
