CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s golfer Amanda Sambach (Pinehurst, N.C.) has been invited to participate in the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship. This year’s tournament marks the fourth consecutive year she will have competed in the event.
The 2024 ANWA takes place April 3-6 in Augusta, Ga. Sambach met the standard of being among the United States’ top-30 players in the final World Amateur Golf Rankings for 2023 to qualify for the field. She is currently the No. 14 player in the ranking and fourth among American players.
The first 36 holes of the ANWA will be contested over two days on the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., April 3 and 4. The entire field will then play Augusta National for an official practice round Friday, April 5. The final round will take place at Augusta National on Saturday, April 6 and will feature the competitors who made the cut.
Last year Sambach placed 14th overall, advancing to the final round for the first time. She tied for 30th in 2022 and was one of four players involved in a playoff to advance to the final round of the tournament. Her appearance in 2021 came during her senior year of high school competition.
Sambach won the ACC individual championship last year and finished the season ranked No. 10 by Golfweek. She earned first-team All-America honors from Golfweek and was a second-team All-America by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. Sambach set the UVA record for wins in a season with three. She opened the year by taking medalist honors at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate. She won the ACC Championships by shooting 14-under 202, which was the best performance in the event’s history and also set the Virginia 54-hole scoring record. At the NCAA Regional, she finished as co-medalist. Over the course of 10 tournaments, she posted five top-10 finishes.
Sambach’s 71.31 stroke average was the best single-season mark in Cavalier history as was her total of 19 rounds of par or better. She also set UVA records for par-3 scoring (3.0081 avg.) and par-5 scoring (4.7156). She matched the Virginia single-season mark with five eagles.
Sambach was a finalist for both the Division I PING Women’s Golf Coaches Association Player of the Year honor and the ANNIKA Award, both of which are presented to the nation’s top female collegiate golfer.
