WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – Washington men’s golf posted the low round of the day in Wednesday’s final round at the Southwestern Invitational, climbing up the leaderboard at North Ranch Country Club to finish fifth.
The round was spotlighted by an exceptional performance from Taehoon Song, whose seven-under 64 was not only good for the low round of the day, but a runner-up finish.
“We were better today than we were yesterday,” head coach Alan Murray said. “The guys benefitted from another day of practice after the round yesterday. There was some good golf from the guys again today.”
It was the second day running with a blemish-free scorecard for Song, posting his third round of the season of 65 or under. The senior entered the clubhouse atop the leaderboard but was caught by Ohio State’s Neal Shipley, finishing a single shot back at 11-under.
“Really impressive to do that while in contention and (Taehoon) really looked good out there today,” Murray said about Song. “He has a ton of game and this was another step forward for him this week.”
Meanwhile, the bulk of the UW five finished right around par, as Petr Hruby and Teddy Lin notched a one-under and even round, respectively. This came just one day after Hruby carded his tournament-best score of 69 while Lin maintained his consistent play by tacking on his second round of shooting 71 in as many days. Finn Koelle concluded his tournament run two-over as the freshman collected five birdies on the day and back-to-back rounds shooting 73.
“Petr had another under-par round and is starting to find his form while Teddy was his usual steady self, he is very consistent at being around par and we can rely on him doing that on every kind of course we play,” Murray said. “Finn had a great finish to the round and showed a lot of grit and tenacity to bring his round back and count for us.”
Freshman Justin Bai saved his best for last and shot an even 71, enough to land him tied for 67th along with teammate Drew Warford, who also ended his time at North Ranch Country Club fourteen-over.
“Solid even par round from Justin today, while the scoring may have been not what he wanted, he will learn a lot…
