Kaua’i, Hawai’i — The USC men’s golf team concluded the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday (Feb. 15) at the Ocean Course Hokuala in Lihu’e, Kaua’i, Hawai’i. On the oceanside course, the Trojans finished the day in solo 20th, 3 shots behind UC Santa Barbara. The final score for USC’s first round was a total of 10-over (72+72+74+80=298).
After one day of competition, Long Beach State currently holds first place, and the Beach sits at 15-under, 2 shots in front of second place Washington State.
Antonio Safa was the leading Trojans throughout the day after an up and down round. After starting birdie-birdie, Safa fell back a couple strokes, but found his stride again on the second nine to make an eagle and 2 birdies on his final 6 holes. Safa finished his round in even par 72 and a tie for 51st.
Nicolas Dominguez got off to a hot start, making 4 birdie on the opening nine holes. He dropped back a few strokes on the final few holes of the round to post an even par 72, to also tie for 51st.
Sam Lape made 4 birdies in his round, and wrapped up the day at 2-over par 74 to claim a tie for 70th.
Gavin Aurilia and Krando Nishiba both found it tough going today. Nishiba started slowly but posted an eagle early in the round, but lost momentum on the back nince to finish at 8-over 80 and a solo 115th place. Aurilia concluded day one at 12-over 84 in 122nd.
The Trojans return to the course tomorrow morning for day two of three rounds of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
