GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 17 Arizona Women’s Golf completed their wire-to-wire victory of the Gators Invitational on Saturday, using a 3-under par final round to win the tournament by an impressive 16 strokes with a final score of 8-under. The Wildcats also picked up an individual win as sophomore Nena Wongthanavimok shot a career-low 66 in the final round to earn co-medalist honors with UCF’s Pimpisa Sisutham. The victory in Gainesville marked the first collegiate win of Wongthanavimok’s career as she ended the tournament at 6-under par.
“This was a statement weekend for our program, and I am incredibly proud of these young ladies,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “Hats off to Nena on a great week to earn her first collegiate victory as she set a great tone for our entire team. All our lineup played some great golf, which is reflected in all five of our Wildcats finishing in the top 15 of the leaderboards. We wanted to come out and continue our strong play in adverse weather conditions, and we accomplished that goal with three rounds of great team golf and two titles.”
Junior Carolina Melgrati finished her weekend in fifth place at 2-under. Gile Bite Starkute finished a stroke behind Melgrati in a tie for sixth. The duo of Julia Misemer and Charlotte Back earned top-15 finishes after shooting 3-over for the tournament.
Arizona led the tournament in par-3 and par-4 scoring over the course of 54 holes, including Melgrati and Wongthanavimok finished first and second in individual par-4 scoring. The Cats led by 11 strokes after the second round and extended their lead as one of only two teams in the field to break par in the third round. The 16-stroke victory is the program’s biggest team win since winning the 2020 Wildcat Invitational by 22 strokes.
The Wildcats will return to the state of Arizona for their next event, making their annual appearance in the ASU/PING Invitational. Arizona will take on Papago Golf Course in Tempe, where they played last season’s Pac-12 Championships, beginning on Sunday, March 24.
