Wildcats Battle in Second Day of Cabo Collegiate

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – No. 9 Arizona Men’s Golf battled through 18 holes on the second day of the Cabo Collegiate to end Tuesday’s round in 11th place at 11-over par. Junior Tiger Christensen and sophomore Yannick Malik carded the Wildcats’ lowest round of the day as each shot even par. Arizona continued their strong play on Twin Dolphin Golf Club’s longest holes as Zach Pollo leads the 80-player field in par-5 scoring average. Christensen eagled the 571-yard 13th hole while the rest of the Wildcats all birdied the first par 5 on the back nine on Monday.

“Our play faded as the day went on after a quality start for us,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “We kind of hit a wall as we made the turn to the front nine in the afternoon and were strong on the final few holes. We will take today as a learning opportunity and focus on moving on and putting it behind us. It’s a new day and a new round to play on Tuesday, and our team’s goal is to make the most of the final round.”

With only six of the field’s 15 teams breaking par on Monday, Arizona sits within six strokes of the next three teams ahead of it on the leaderboard. Only four teams will enter Tuesday’s finale below par, led by first-place Arkansas at 9-under.

The tandem of Filip Jakubcik and Zach Pollo, who led the Wildcats in the first round, are the top Wildcats in individual scoring to place in the top 30 at 1-over and 2-over respectively. Four members of Arizona’s lineup are separated by a total of three strokes. Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen leads all players and sits alone in first place at 8-under par.

Arizona will play its final 18 holes of the Cabo Collegiate on Tuesday morning and will be paired alongside Baylor, California and Florida State. The quartet of teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m. (MST) off the back nine.
