Smith Cards 2-under, 69, to Close Darius Rucker Intercollegiate


HILTON HEAD, S.C. For the second time over the last three days, Duke women’s golf sophomore Andie Smith carded a 2-under-par, 69, on Wednesday to close action at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the 6,369-yard, par-71, Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
 
Smith, a native of Hobe Sound, Fla., carded her second top-20 finish of the season and fifth of her career as she posted rounds of 69, 77 and 69 for a 2-over, 215, which was tied for 19th.  She now owns eight rounds in the 60s over her short Blue Devil career.   
 
Graduate student Emma McMyler also posted a top-20 finish as she placed tied for 19th with scores of 71, 70 and 74 for a 54-hole total of 215.  It marked her second top-20 finish this season and 27th of her collegiate career.
 
How It Happened

  • Andie Smith featured the best start to the day for the Blue Devils as she rolled in an 8-footer for birdie on No. 3, hit her pitching wedge from 125 yards on No. 4 to six feet for birdie and then hit her 6-iron from 161 yards to five feet for birdie on No. 7 to get to 3-under-par.  Smith had her only blemish of the day on the ninth hole with a bogey and then parred the final nine holes to finish with a 69.  She hit 10 fairways and 10 greens, while collecting a career-best 26 putts.  Smith scrambled well all day registering seven up-and-downs. 
  • After a pair of pars to open the day, senior Anne Chen suffered a double-bogey.She quickly was able to get back to even par as she hit her pitching wedge from 120 yards to nine feet for birdie on No. 4 and then rolled in a 13-footer for birdie on No. 8.Chen, who is from Sugar Land, Texas, added another bogey on the 12th hole, but quickly rebounded by hitting her 50-degree wedge from 101 yards to a foot for birdie on the 374-yard, par-5 14th.She closed the day with three pars and a bogey to finish with a 1-over, 72.Chen placed tied for 33rd with a 4-over, 217.
  • Emma McMyler had a hot start to her round as she hit her 50-degree wedge from 105 yards on her third shot into the par-5 third hole to seven feet for birdie.  She also stuck her approach from 99 yards out on No. 6 to a foot for birdie to get to 2-under through six holes.  McMyler, a product of San Antonio, Texas, played her final 12 holes at 4-over to finish with a 74.  On the par-4 No. 14, McMyler hit her drive into the penalty…
