The Nebraska women’s golf team opens a busy week on the East Coast when the Huskers travel to South Carolina for the Briar’s Creek Invitational, March 11-12.
The Big Red will face a loaded 17-team field on a 6,152-yard layout at The Golf Club at Briar’s Creek in Johns Island, S.C. The tournament begins with the first two rounds on Monday, March 11, with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (CT). The 54-hole event concludes with the final round beginning with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday.
All 17 teams in the field are ranked among the top 105 in the country, headlined by No. 10 Florida and No. 17 UCF. No. 68 Nebraska is among eight Big Ten Conference teams in the tournament – all ranked among the nation’s top 100, including No. 26 Purdue, No. 35 Michigan State, No. 37 Maryland, No. 67 Illinois, No. 69 Wisconsin, No. 95 Penn State and No. 100 Rutgers.
Kelli Ann Strand, who is coming off a fifth-place finish with a season-best 204 (-12) at the Westbrook Spring Invitational (Feb. 25-26), owns a team-best 70.60 stroke average on the season. The No. 107 golfer in the nation, Strand owns six top-20 finishes in seven tournaments, including a trio of top-10 efforts. Strand, who opened the spring with a tie for sixth at 210 (-6) at the UCF Challenge (Feb. 3-5), was the Big Ten Golfer of the Week (Feb. 7).
Lindsey Thiele will play out of the No. 3 spot at Briar’s Creek after posting a season-best 212 (-4) to tie for 32nd at Westbrook. Thiele, a senior from Wahoo, Neb., also tied for seventh with a two-round total of 143 (-1) at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational (Feb. 18-19). She ranks second among the Huskers with a 72.82 stroke average on the season.
