Blue Devils Grab Fifth-Place Finish at The Hayt


SAWGRASS, Fla. – The Duke men’s golf team wrapped up play at The Hayt on Monday, securing a fifth-place finish at 18-over, 882, after shooting a 2-over, 290, during the third round. Ethan Evans earned his best individual finish as a Blue Devil, tying for second place at 2-under, 214.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND THREE

  • Duke finished with one of the best rounds on the course during the final round, firing a 2-over, 290, to close out the event.
  • Ethan Evans used a strong closing stretch of holes to secure a 1-over, 73, on Monday. The sophomore made the turn at 2-over after bogeys on holes No. 2 and 9 but got one shot back on the par-5 11th. Back-to-back bogeys moved Evans to 3-over, but he rolled in two birdies in his final three holes, including on the 520-yard, par-5, 18th. The Mercer Island, Wash., native finished in a tie for second place overall, his best individual finish of his career, at 2-under, 214.
  • Bryan Kim and Luke Sample both signed for the low Blue Devil rounds of the day, at even-par, 72.
  • Kim played the front-nine at 1-over after a birdie on No. 4 and bogeys on holes No. 6 and 9 and made six consecutive pars to start the back-nine. The freshman sandwiched a bogey between birdies on holes No. 16 and 18 to close out his round. Overall, Kim tied for 41st at 9-over, 225.
  • Sample tallied two birdies and two bogeys during his round while also adding 14 pars across the remainder of his round. The junior birdied one par-5 on each half of his round, while dropping shots on holes No. 6 and 12. Sample finished the event in a tie for 41st with a 9-over, 225.
  • William Love carded a 1-over, 73, to finish off his tournament in a tie for 35th overall at 8-over, 224. Love erased an early double-bogey with an eagle on the par-5 eighth, making the turn at even-par. The sophomore poured in two more birdies on the back-nine to help offset three bogeys in his closing nine holes.
  • Ian Siebers made an early birdie on the par-5 fourth but stumbled on his back-nine with five dropped shots en route to a 6-over, 78. The senior tied for 52nd overall with an 11-over, 227.
  • Jimmy Zheng and Kelly Chinn, playing individually, signed for a 2-under, 70, and 2-over, 74, respectively. Zheng registered back-to-back birdies twice during the round, including on two of his final three holes of the day. Zheng tied for 32nd…
