East Lansing, Mich. – Juniors Katie Lu and Brooke Biermann tied for first place and Michigan State’s women’s golf team won the team championship at the Briar’s Creek Invitational, held at the Golf Club at Briar’s Creek in Johns Island, S.C.
The Spartans led from start to finish on the par-72, 6,152-yard course. This is the second team title at the Briar’s Creek Invitational for the Spartans, who won the event in 2019. It also marks the second time Spartans have claimed medalist honors, with Lu and Biermann tying for first place and joining former Spartan Allyson Geer-Park, who won in 2019 with a tournament record 13-under par 203.
Michigan State shot a 6-over par 294 in Tuesday’s final round to finish at 4-under par 860 (284-282-294) to win the title by five shots over NC State, second at 1-over par 865. Purdue finished in third place (7-over par 871), with Illinois and UCF tied for fourth place at 9-over par 873.
Lu entered the final round in first place with a one-shot lead and went into the back nine atop the leaderboard but finished her round with a 3-over par 75 and tied first place at 5-under par 211 (69-67-75). This is the second time this season Lu took home medalist honors.
Biermann shot a 1-over par 73 to finish tied with Lu, and Lauren Olivares Leon of NC State and Isabel Sy of Illinois, at 5-under par 211 (68-70-73).
Senior Leila Raines had the team’s best round of the day with a 1-under par 71 and finished in the top-10, tying for seventh place at 1-under par 215 (73-71-71).
Sophomore Paula Balanzategui tied for 50th place at 10-over par 226 (76-74-76), while junior Shannon Kennedy tied for 53rd place at 11-over par 227 par 227 (74-78-75).
Senior Valentina Rossi, playing as an individual, tied for 91st place at 20-over par 236 (84-77-75).
Michigan State plays next at the Clemson Invitational, which will be held from Friday, March 22 to Sunday, March 23 at the Reserve on Lake Koewee in Sunset, S.C.
